Introduction
Brain Octane Oil is an especially versatile option because it’s flavorless and odorless. It’s very easy to work into food and drink – including your morning cup of coffee! The high-quality ingredients are reassuring so you know you’re not taking a dose of chemicals with your MCT’s.
Is your morning coffee non-negotiable? Do you get jittery or crash if you don’t balance it out with the right food? I am one of those people who counts coffee as brain-boosting comfort food (with health benefits, of course). I also don’t particularly like the taste of black coffee or the spike and crash of sugary add-ins. Drinking too much in an effort to rev up my day can quickly turn into feeling queasy – not exactly the desired outcome.
In this struggle to enjoy the benefits of morning coffee without the ups and downs, I tried a few different things, from sugar-free sweeteners to paleo creamers. Then I tried Brain Octane Oil. I stand corrected.
What is Brain Octane Oil?
So glad you asked. Brain Octane Oil is an MCT oil made by the Bulletproof Coffee people. Before getting into how and why to use it, let’s get the science out of the way.
What are the ingredients?
Brain Octane Oil has just one ingredient:
Caprylic Acid Triglycerides
Caprylic Acid or “C8” is an MCT. The C8 in Brain Octane Oil is sourced from coconut oil. It’s basically taking the most potent beneficial part of coconut oil and leaving behind the rest. C8 MCT oil can produce up to four times more ketones in the body than regular coconut oil.
Brain Octane MCT Oil is expeller-pressed instead of being extracted with chemical solvents. Some MCT oils extracted with chemicals will have traces of the solvents in the oil. Expeller pressed oil, on the other hand, is a physical process where the oil is pressed out using physical pressure. This ensures a clean oil free from toxic chemicals.
What is MCT?
MCT stands for “medium-chain triglyceride”. It’s a specific type of dietary fat.[1] MCT’s are rare in the dietary fat world. MCT’s are found only in coconut oil, palm oil, human breast milk, and full-fat cow’s milk and goat’s milk. These sources contain other macronutrients as well. When you buy MCT oil, you’re getting pure MCT’s extracted from a source like coconut oil.
Unlike other forms of fat, MCT’s are more easily absorbed by the body because they don’t have to be processed by the pancreas like regular fats. They go right to the liver where they can be converted into ketones and used as energy. In contrast, other forms of fat have to be broken down by digestive enzymes before they can be used.
Why are MCT’s good?
Because MCT’s are so easily processed by the body, they’re more likely to be used as energy instead of being stored as body fat. They convert into ketones which can’t be stored as fat like carbs and sugar can, and are able to pass the blood-brain barrier and supply your brain with nutrients.[2]
MCT has been used medically to help people who have a hard time with food absorption. It’s also notably used in ketogenic diets because they help you achieve and stay in “ketosis”. Athletes use MCT oil to increase performance and support muscle development.[3]
Studies have shown that taking MCT’s can support fat reduction and weight loss.[4] It’s also been shown to help reduce LDL (bad cholesterol). MCT’s provide steady energy and satiety (a feeling of fullness) which can suppress appetite and help you eat less overall.

How do you use Brain Octane Oil?
So…back to your morning coffee. You now know the benefits of Brain Octane Oil and the MCT’s it contains. To get these benefits you need to take it consistently.
You can take up to 2-3 tablespoons per day, but you’ll want to work up to that. Jumping right in and taking that much can give you an upset stomach. Start with just 1 teaspoon and slowly build up to the full serving.
Brain Octane Oil is tasteless and odorless, so you can include it in just about any drink or meal. Here are a few ways you can incorporate servings of Brain Octane Oil into your daily diet:
- Mix 1 tbsp into your morning coffee or tea on an empty stomach
- Mix 1 tbsp into salad dressing
- Drizzle 1 tbsp over a meal
- Mix 1 tbsp into a smoothie
Brain Octane Oil is liquid and very easy to pour. If you don’t like the texture of straight oil in your coffee, you can blend it for a few seconds and it creates a nice frothy texture similar to a latte.
You should generally stay away from heating Brain Octane Oil. MCT’s are heat stable up to 320 degrees Fahrenheit, but they can denature when heated too much. They stay liquid at room temperature, so you can easily drizzle without having to heat it up.
